PORT TOWNSEND — Hannah Von Lossow, 14, a Seattle resident who frequently visits the Port Townsend area, was throwing rocks on a private beach near Glen Cove when she came across a human skull.
“She was pretty shook-up,”‘ said Hannah’s father, Jim Von Lossow.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office believes the skull, as well as other bones unearthed from a bank above the beach, probably are Native American.
“The apparent flat wear pattern on the teeth and the morphology of the cranium are suggestive of North American ancestry,” said Detective Joe Noel.
Working with specialists
He is working with Jamestown S’Klallam tribal specialists, a forensic anthropologist from King County and the state Historic Preservation Office in Olympia.
“It was quite unexpected,” Von Lossow said of his daughter’s discovery.
