PORT TOWNSEND — Kenneth Kelly’s Victorian home hardware businesses would bring “more than 20 jobs,” according to Jefferson County Republicans.
That’s why the GOP representatives are campaigning to persuade the Port Townsend City Council to reconsider its vote denying a zone change to allow Kelly’s 20,000-square-foot distribution center off Sims Way.
The effort is part of the “overall theme” of the county Republican chapter, chairwoman Barbara Bradford said Tuesday.
“The Republican Party stands for jobs,” she said. “We think it’s the most important issue in the county right now.”
Last week, the City Council shot down a ordinance that would rezone 1.5 acres of excess Jefferson Transit land to a general commercial designation.
The land is south of its 1615 W. Sims Way facility.
Residents of the neighborhood said Kelly’s proposed distribution center at Third and Hancock streets would create an eyesore and cause excessive traffic.
