PORT TOWNSEND — The City Council has authorized spending up to $250,000 to study water, sewer and transportation improvements in the upper Sims Way commercial area.
The council voted 5-1 Monday to authorize City Manager David Timmons to sign a contract with consulting firm Washington Engineers to plan improvements at and around the Port Townsend Business Park and transportation improvements along Sims Way and Discovery Road.
Councilwoman Freida Fenn opposed the study.
The study — which is expected to be completed by the fall — could lead to several million dollars of improvements to assist businesses locating there.
Timmons said the city had dealt with a number of businesses wanting to locate to the area — Port Townsend Lumber among them — that found costs for setting up infrastructure prohibitive.
The study would be the first step in constructing infrastructure for those businesses.
