Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge has approved a $1.8 million hazard mitigation grant for Port Townsend to reconstruct its main fire station.
The fire hall was deemed seismically unsound after damage from the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.
“FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is proud to assist Port Townsend in enhancing public safety and improving its disaster response capabilities,”‘ agency Regional Director John Pennington said.
The agency will provide $1.27 million of the grant.
The grant will fund rebuilding the fire station at the intersection of Lawrence and Harrison streets and incorporate an emergency operations center.
