NEAH BAY — A Port Townsend man died Saturday morning while scuba diving off Tatoosh Island northwest of Cape Flattery.
Victor W. Porter, 58, was declared dead at U.S. Coast Guard Station Neah Bay after a 25-foot response boat was launched to the scene.
When Porter surfaced beside an 18-foot Zodiac boat he was unresponsive, said Petty Officer Mike Zolzer, a spokesman for Coast Guard District 13 in Seattle.
The two other members of Porter’s diving party administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but could not revive him, Zolzer said.
The investigation is being handled by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, said West End Sgt. Dave Lenahan, who is stationed in Clallam Bay.
A gauge on Porter’s tank indicated he had descended 184 feet, Lenahan said, who noted that the tank was empty.
“It’s unknown why he ran out of air,” Lenahan said.
