PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Historical Society told the City Council last November it would ask for at least $300,000 for the City Hall restoration.
But several City Council members expressed surprise earlier this week when they read a progress report that stated the society would need 20 percent of the $5 million to $6 million restoration project to come from local supporters, including the government.
“I was shocked by this report,”‘ Councilman Allen Frank said. “As I flipped through this, I said we need to talk about this right now. Originally, I was led to believe the city’s involvement was the $92,000 we provided for the architects and fund-raising analysis. I don’t recall any discussion of contributions.
Frank said any significant government contribution would have to be approved by in a public vote.
