PORT TOWNSEND — People parking downtown could soon be faced with different time limits, at least for an interim period, if the City Council approves an experimental plan from the Downtown Parking Task Force.
The change could be approved as early as next Monday’s council meeting, and the experiment could start within a few weeks.
City Engineer Dave Peterson said the task force’s recommendation would allow people making the shortest stops to park closest to the downtown core, while long-term users would need to walk several blocks, or ride Jefferson Transit’s shuttle, to reach their destinations.
One of the major changes submitted by the task force was substituting two-hour parking in the Back Alley lot off Tyler Street and the lot between Elevated Ice Cream and the police station on Water Street.
Both spots are open for 24-hour parking.
“This will open up more downtown parking to local residents,” task force member Kris Nelson told the council.
