PORT TOWNSEND — Fort Worden State Park visitors may not have to pay parking fees this year thanks to the City Council, say community leaders and parks officials.
In a 5-1 vote, City Council agreed Tuesday night to contribute $15,000 to a Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce-led initiative aimed at averting the new $5 daily fees.
“It’s not a done deal,” said Tim Caldwell, a member of the Fort Worden Advisory Committee and general manager of the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce.
“But I think it’s safe to say we will be able to make the final payment to Washington State Parks by Jan. 31.”
The Chamber of Commerce has until the end of the month to raise $25,000 to keep parking free at the park in 2003.
