PORT TOWNSEND — A pay increase approved this week by the City Council will be implemented on an incremental basis and has the potential to make council members the highest paid on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Four council seats are on the Nov. 4 general election ballot, and the winners will be paid $375 a month when they take office in January.
The three remaining council members will continue to be paid $250 a month.
In January 2006, all council members will receive $500 a month.
While the monthly pay for council members is going up, the mayor — who is elected by the council — will receive less money beginning in January 2004 when the pay drops from $1,000 a month to $750.
By comparison, Port Angeles City Council members receive $400 a month, with the deputy mayor getting $450 a month and the mayor $500.
In Sequim, council members are paid $150 a month, with the mayor pro-tem earning $200 a month and the mayor $250 a month.
