PORT TOWNSEND — With a $2.8 million annex to City Hall still awaiting approval, City Council members said Monday they would be in favor of another large project — a $5.3 million restoration of City Hall.
A majority of council members indicated Monday they would support the city taking the lead in the project currently being planned by the Jefferson County Historical Society.
Council members said they would also consider contributing funding — perhaps $600,000 or more — toward preserving and restoring the 111-year-old building.
The council meeting Monday was intended only as a “first touch” on an ordinance to issue bonds to build a $2.8 million annex next to the current City Hall.
The proposed annex would house city administrative offices.
But council members explored the idea of seeking a larger bond to restore the historic City Hall as well.
“We need to do these jointly,” Councilwoman Michelle Sandoval said. “We need to show people we love City Hall and have respect for our historic buildings. Future generations will thank us.”
