PORT TOWNSEND — Fund-raising efforts aimed at keeping Fort Worden State Park free of parking fees are coming down to the wire, says a member of the park’s advisory committee.
Tim Caldwell, a member of Fort Worden Advisory Committee, asked the city Lodging Tax Advisory Committee for up to a $15,000 contribution Tuesday night, but he said he won’t know if he’ll get the funding until the end of the month.
“I’m still confident we can get the money,” he said Wednesday. “But we will use all 31 days in January to get this thing done.”
The Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce, of which Caldwell is executive director, has until Jan. 31 to come up with $25,000 to keep parking free at the park.
Otherwise, visitors will have to pay $5 a day to park, or $50 for an annual pass.
The fees were invoked statewide to offset a state Park and Recreation Commission deficit.
