PORT TOWNSEND — The Port of Port Townsend on Wednesday proposed swapping Kah Tai Lagoon for the city-owned Port Townsend Golf Club.
The golf course has been mentioned as a possible site for a performing arts center that has been the subject of private meetings for about two years and only came to light about a month ago.
Port commissioners surprised their city counterparts by proposing the links-for-lagoon swap — apparently there had been no previous discussion with anyone on the City Council — and it was unclear whether it had any connection to the arts center proposal.
Port Townsend Mayor Catharine Robinson said the Port’s announcement was too sudden to comment on.
“It’s kind of out of the blue,” she said Wednesday evening.
It isn’t unusual for a port district to be in the golf course business, Port Commissioner Bob Sokol said.
He said it would fit in with the recreational opportunities mandate under which the Port operates.
