Port of Port Angeles will try to find new executive director itself

PORT ANGELES — The Port of Port Angeles will begin the search for a new executive using just staff resources, but did not rule out hiring a consultant later if the pool of candidates isn’t satisfactory, commissioners unanimously decided today.

“I think we can do it internally with our staff and through ads in trade journals and the newspapers,” Commissioner George Schoenfeldt said.

“I wouldn’t mind looking for consultants, but I would really hate to spend that money.”

Commissioner Jim McEntire had suggested a more aggressive timeline ending in two or three weeks, but when Holly Hairell, human resources manager, said that the Washington Public Port Association newsletter deadline is June 15 for the July edition, the commissioners determined they would set the deadline for one week after the publication of the newsletter.

The publication date was not available on Tuesday, and Hairell said she would look into it in the coming days.

The commissioners also determined that a specific agenda item will be set aside during the June 8 meeting to hear from the public on what type of person they should consider for the new executive director.

Former Executive Director Bob McChesney’s last day was May 15. He resigned to take up the top post at the Port of Edmonds, where he will begin next week.

The commissioners did not discuss a salary range or experience requirement for the new director.

McChesney made about $123,000 annually.

Port Finance Director Bill James is serving as the interim director.
