PORT ANGELES — The Boat Haven’s aging, heavily used west boat launch has been targeted for an estimated $496,000 in renovations.
Port of Port Angeles commissioners unanimously agreed Tuesday to apply for a $372,000 grant from the state Recreation and Conservation Office Boating Facilities Program to fund the project.
The port would provide a 25 percent match, or $124,000, to renovate the launch, which is more than 40 years old and is heavily used during salmon and halibut seasons.
The deadline for the application is July 1. Awards will be announced in December 2015.
The concrete launch would be repaired and the 12-inch steel guide piles that anchor the floats at the launch replaced.
New gangways also would be installed.
Winter launch?
Commissioner Colleen McAleer said the public has wanted a Boat Haven boat launch that stays in the water during winter months.
The launch is removed then to protect them from the buffeting they take from swells coming out of the east during winter weather, port staff said.
Director of Engineering Chris Hartman said a winter boat launch is on Ediz Hook, about 3 miles away.
The ramp leads down to floating docks. Those were replaced last year.
The project will help the ramp’s floating docks last longer, Hartman said.
“It is a maintenance project,” he said.
