PORT ANGELES – When Gig Harbor’s Harborview Marina caught fire in September 2005, critical oil spill response equipment was available to the firefighters who arrived at the scene.
Those “first responders” used the equipment to keep oil and other chemicals from boats at the marina from spreading into Puget Sound.
So the state Department of Ecology asked the 2006 state Legislature for $1.45 million to outfit trailers with oil spill response equipment and train first responders on its use.
The oil spill equipment grants program provides 60 grants valued at about $20,000 each, including the trailer, equipment and training.
