Port of Port Angeles approves emergency replacement of log storage anchor chains

PORT ANGELES — Port of Port Angeles commissioners unanimously approved the replacement of aquatic log storage anchor chains in Port Angeles Harbor during an emergency meeting Monday.

The port discovered while replacing a buoy east of the aquatic storage that the top section of the anchor chain was so degraded that it could fail during rough weather.

Officials estimate the replacement project will cost about $50,000.

“Our knowledge of this just came up,” said Karen Goschen, executive director of the port. “We wanted to act on it because we’re getting into the storm season. If those were to break in the next storm event, you’ll have logs rolling around and tossed around in the harbor.”

She said if that happens there is a risk they could cause property damage and “create substantial damage.”

The chains are attached to an anchor system in the harbor floor in its west end.

Commissioners approved the contract with Legacy Contracting Inc. for $800 an hour for time and materials.

The port chose Legacy because it had just finished the Terminal 3 head tie dolphin and was still in the immediate area.
