Port Ludlow resident announces candidacy for county commissioner

PORT LUDLOW — John Austin of Port Ludlow has announced his candidacy for District 3 Jefferson County commissioner.

Austin, a Democrat, is running for the commissioner seat currently held by Pat Rodgers, R-Brinnon.

Rodgers announced in early January that he will not seek a second term in office this fall.

The 65-year-old Rodgers said that the health of his wife, Bonnie, and his desire to enjoy retirement with his family were the primary reasons behind his decision.

With a Ph.D in counseling psychology from the University of California at Berkeley, Austin, now retired at 64, said his experience as a psychologist, college instructor and clinic director has prepared him to deal with complex county issues involving varying points of view.

“I see [my career experience] as being primarily helpful because it’s taught me to listen and problem solve,” Austin said.

“I want people to know that I’ll listen to what they have to say.”

Supports Tri-Area sewer

Austin said in the time leading up to the November general election, he plans to throw himself into a “true study of the issues.”

Austin said establishing a sewer in the Tri-Area as one of the most important tasks he will undertake if successful in his campaign.

“The sewer issue in the Tri-Area is a big one, and it needs to happen,” said Austin.

Although he’s committed to development in Jefferson County, which a sewer would make possible, and provide a greater tax base, Austin said he is likewise committed to preserving the county’s natural beauty.
