PORT LUDLOW — It was a long time ago, before houses lined the shore, before the marina was built, before the lumber mill closed.
The salmon remember.
Paula Mackrow hopes people will remember, too.
Mackrow, North Olympic Salmon Coalition director, is asking anyone who remembers hearing stories about salmon in the upper Ludlow Creek watershed to call her office.
Collecting anecdotal evidence of salmon in the creek above Ludlow Falls is the first step in removing barriers to restoring a salmon run.
“Fish and Wildlife is not receptive to building access over the falls unless they know it was formerly an anadromous habitat,” Mackrow said Thursday speaking at a meeting of the Port Ludlow Village Council.
Ludlow Creek, which runs through the resort community, collects rainfall from an extensive watershed that covers half of Beaver Valley.
