Port Hadlock man charged with slashing police officers in Mill Creek

EVERETT — A Port Hadlock man was charged Wednesday in Snohomish County District Court with first-, second- and third-degree assault in connection with knife slashings of two Mill Creek police officers on Sunday.

Stephen P. McClane, 35, remained in Snohomish County Jail in Everett on Wednesday night in lieu of $1 million bail.

“McClane stated . . . `I knew if I stabbed him he could die,”‘ according to Snohomish County Deputy Marcus Dill’s report.

McClane is scheduled to be charged with the same counts in Snohomish County Superior Court on Dec. 22, Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Penny Abbott said Wednesday.

Three Mill Creek police officers answering a call for help at an argument at a home in Mill Creek at 2:46 a.m. Sunday asked McClane, who was temporarily staying there, to step outside, according to a Mill Creek Police Department news release.

Once outside, the officers searched McClane for weapons.

McClane said, “You’re not going to like this,” and pulled out a three-inch paring knife, according to the release.

McClane attacked the three officers, slashing Mill Creek Police Officer Andrew Bass on the left arm and face, and slightly injuring Sgt. Michael Reidt.

Officer Jennifer Clark was not attacked.

The officers threw McClane to the ground.

Bass was treated at the Colby Campus hospital in Everett and is now home recovering, Mill Creek Police Department spokeswoman Chris Risen said Wednesday.

McClane was treated for head injuries at the same hospital and then booked Sunday into the Snohomish County Jail.
