PORT HADLOCK — Dan Youra, the author of maps and tourist guides, enjoys drawing political cartoons as a hobby.
His artwork has appeared in newspapers and on the Internet.
As state committeeman for the Jefferson County Republican Party, Youra framed one of his cartoon portraits to present to the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Reince Priebus, on his recent visit to Seattle.
The artwork, titled “Three Budgeteers,” is a portrait of three prominent GOP leaders, one of whom is Priebus, and all from Wisconsin, where Youra was born and raised.
The other two political caricatures in the portrait are Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, and Scott Walker, Wisconsin’s governor.
Postcard portrait
“The big surprise for me,” said Youra about his meeting with the RNC chairman, “was that he told me he already had a postcard-size copy of my portrait [of him] under the glass on his desk. Now, he has one for his wall.”
Youra was born in Two Rivers, Wis., and raised in Fond du Lac.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 1967 and was the university’s first graduate to receive a Fulbright scholarship from the U.S. State Department.
Youra lives in Port Hadlock and has been a resident on the North Olympic Peninsula since 1974.
