Port eyes 30 percent John Wayne Marina rate hike

SEQUIM — The average permanent monthly moorage rate at John Wayne Marina could increase by 30 percent starting July 1 under a proposal to be considered Monday by the Port of Port Angeles board of commissioners.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the public meeting room at John Wayne Marina, 2577 West Sequim Bay Road, east of Sequim.

The current John Wayne Marina moorage rates are $4.65 per foot for a 20-foot boat, $4.85 per foot for a 30-foot boat, $5.25 per foot for a 40-foot boat and $5.65 per foot for a 50-foot boat.

The marina’s “sloped increase,” where rates increase as the boat gets longer, is 3.3 cents per foot per month.

Port staff is recommending an average 30 percent increase for permanent moorage rates, which account for two-thirds of John Wayne Marina’s gross revenue.

The average “sloped increase” would be set at 5 cents per foot under the Port staff’s proposal.

Phase in over five years

An option also will be presented Monday to phase in the proposed permanent moorage rate increase over five years.

Under the proposed rate increases, boats 20 to 29 feet in length would pay $6.05 per foot per month, a 30 percent increase of $1.40.

Boats that are 30 to 39 feet long would pay $6.55 per foot per month, a 35 percent increase of $1.70.

Boats that are 40 to 49 feet long would pay $7.05 per foot per month under the proposal, a 34 percent increase of $1.80.

Boats that are 50 feet or longer would pay $7.55 per foot per month, a 34 percent increase of $1.90.

The 2005 moorage rates have already increased 3.4 percent due to an inflation adjustment.
