Port Angeles: YMCA proposes pool partnership with City Hall

PORT ANGELES — While the city staff continues seeking a central location for a new indoor swimming pool, Clallam County Family YMCA has proposed partnering with the city to build or operate a new pool — or both.

“It would be a full-service community center. Our board of directors got excited about it, so we proposed to the city,” said Dan Maguire, YMCA executive director.

He is waiting for more information from city officials before putting together a detailed proposal, Maguire said.

The City Council’s parks and recreation subcommittee — council members Gary Braun, Grant Munro and Lauren Erickson and Parks and Recreation Director Marc Connelly — will meet Wednesday to hear an update on the effort to build a new city pool.

“We’d like to see the numbers and then we could put together something,” Maguire said.

“We see it more as a community facility. Maybe we would even keep the name William Shore Memorial Pool.”

Seeking a new location

The City Council voted 6-1 in June to have city staff explore a central location for a new city pool, rather than refurbish the 43-year-old William Shore Memorial Pool at 225 E. Fifth St.

The lone “no” vote for building a new pool came from Erickson, a member of the pool advisory committee that proposed refurbishing the existing pool.
