PORT ANGELES — A luxury yacht manufacturer is considering a multimillion-dollar expansion that could bring 200 jobs to Port Angeles — if the Port will sell the company the land it needs.
Port commissioners have scheduled a hearing for next month to listen to what the public thinks.
Westport Shipyard wants to develop a facility to build 164-foot yachts costing $30 million each.
“It is a very ambitious program, but they are confident there is strong interest (in such yachts),” said Port Deputy Executive Director Dave Hagiwara.
The company is interested in buying about three acres of waterfront land now used for log storage just west of the huge blue building and other boat-repair facilities used by Platypus Marine.
The proposal raises several issues, including selling waterfront land, space for log-handling, the Port’s shipyard permit and stormwater control, Hagiwara told commissioners at their meeting Monday.
