Senior citizens in Clallam and Jefferson counties might be able to participate in the Washington State Senior Games next year without traveling to Thurston County as 10 Port Angeles athletes did last month.
The Port Angeles City Council this week recognized the 10 Port Angeles Senior Center members who won 16 medals in the recent 2004 Washington State Senior Games in and around Olympia.
They qualified for the 2005 National Senior Games in Pittsburgh.
“I’m really proud of what this group was able to do but we are just scratching the surface,” city Parks and Recreation Marc Connelly told the City Council.
“We are looking to bring a similar event here,” he said, noting the 500 athletes plus families and friends who attended the three-day event in Olympia, Tumwater and Lacey.
Connelly said options being pursued are hosting the Puget Sound Senior Games, becoming affiliated with the Washington State Senior Games or just putting on an athletic competition for seniors.
The event would be held in September 2005, he said.
