PORT ANGELES — About 80 people turned out Wednesday night to hear a presentation on five potential sites for the city’s new swimming pool.
“This far exceeded my expectations for a meeting during the week,” said Public Works Director Glenn Cutler.
Rex Bond from ARC Architects of Seattle showed five potential sites for the proposed plunge to replace the 44-year-old William Shore Memorial Swimming Pool at 225 E. Fifth St.
Four sites are located on city property between Fourth and Fifth streets and Lincoln and Peabody streets. The fifth is located just south of the Clallam County Family YMCA building at 302 S. Francis St.
Cutler said the presentation will be available in a few days on the city’s Web site, www.cityofpa.us.
Wednesday’s meeting was not intended to discuss the pool’s maintenance or operation, just its future site, Cutler said.
Remodeling dismissed
Bond said the city’s pool committee decided to build a new pool because remodeling the current pool would cost an estimated $6 million and still not meet the city’s needs.
The cost estimate for a new pool is between $9.6 million and $11 million. It would include competition lanes, lap lanes, diving area, leisure area — also referred to as “zero depth”– a spa, a party room and a dryland training area that would include weights and similar equipment.
The proposed building would encompass 32,000 square feet and need an estimated 118 parking spaces, Bond said.
All five options lack enough parking, he said.
