PORT ANGELES –The aggravated first-degree murder trial of Thomas Martin Roberts begins today in Clallam County Superior Court.
Roberts, 56, has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity in the Aug. 5, 2000 shooting of Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Wally Davis.
The trial in Judge George L. Wood’s court before a jury of Island County residents is expected to last three to four weeks.
If convicted, Roberts could face life imprisonment. Clallam County Prosecutor Chris Shea decided not to seek the death penalty for Roberts, saying life imprisonment is an easier verdict to reach given the case’s circumstances.
