PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles downtown tree and sidewalk replacement project will begin Monday.
Work crews from Interwest Construction Inc. will begin removal of outgrown trees as well as the repair of tree wells, curb ramps and portions of the sidewalk on Railroad Avenue and Front, Oak and Laurel streets.
Tree removal will take place from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday through April 5 to minimize disruptions to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Work areas have been selected based on locations that have experienced the greatest settlement between brick pavers and concrete sidewalks, or that have been affected by tree roots lifting sidewalks and tree boxes.
The project is designed to enhance pedestrian safety by eliminating trip hazards while also beautifying the downtown area.
Outgrown trees will be recycled into mulch and replaced with new species that are less likely to cause sidewalk lifting issues such as Armstrong maple, Bowhall maple and Chancellor littleleaf linden.
The entire project is expected to be completed in June; residents and visitors are requested to use caution and follow any detour or safety instructions provided.
