Port Angeles Toastmasters marks anniversary

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Toastmasters Club will celebrate its 70th anniversary as a chartered service club Monday, Aug. 12.

All are invited to the anniversary commemoration at 7 p.m. at the Raymond Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served.

The public will have the opportunity to meet members, learn more about the club and get a taste of what it is like.

The evening’s formal agenda includes a networking activity for attendees, four prepared speeches by club members and a question-and-answer session.

Club member Michael Schmitt will serve as master of ceremonies.

The Port Angeles Toastmasters Club has met continuously since a group of World War II veterans started it in 1947.

The club is a member of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs.

Membership throughout the past 70 years has included a state senator, several mayors and several port commissioners, among many others.

In the past 35 years, 16 club members have competed at the district level, chalking up several wins.

The Port Angeles club meets from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays at the Clallam Transit building at 830 W. Lauridsen Blvd.

For more information, contact club President Bill Thomas at 360-460-4510 or see 25.toastmastersclubs.org.

The Jefferson County Club meets from noon to 1 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays. For information, see jeffco.toastmasters clubs.org.
