Port Angeles to be in the pink for Operation Uplift fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — Pink ribbons bedecking downtown Port Angeles on Saturday will announce the beginning of the weeklong Pink Up Port Angeles fundraiser for Operation Uplift.

“We will be tying pink ribbons everywhere downtown,” said Linda DeBord of the Port Angeles Soroptimist Noon Club, which organized Pink Up Port Angeles.

Highlights of the week’s offerings will range from a special Father’s Day walk to a concert, a spaghetti dinner served by “celebrity” waiters, a second dinner with silent and live auctions, and a golf tournament.

Proceeds will go to Operation Uplift, a Port Angeles-based group that offers education, information, support meetings, a 24-hour phone line, free clinics, prostheses and wigs to those with cancer.

The 2010 Pink Up campaign raised more than $27,000, DeBord said.

“All the money raised stays local in Port Angeles for the use of people here,” she said.

On Saturday, the Soroptimists plan a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Swain’s General Store, 602 E. First St., Port Angeles.

Also Saturday, in conjunction with the campaign, Olympic Medical Center will conduct a free breast health clinic at its digital mammography center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The breast clinic was already full as of Thursday. Twenty-four women will receive free screenings, DeBord said.

OMC is hosting its second free breast screening clinic in partnership with First Federal, Operation Uplift and Pink Up Port Angeles.

Pooch and Papa Walk

The second annual Pink Up Port Angeles Pooch and Papa Walk will be along the Waterfront Trail from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Participants will start at City Pier and walk or run along the trail to Francis Street Park and back.

“We’re hoping to turn the Waterfront Trail pink with T-shirts,” DeBord said.

Participants in the event underwritten by Randy’s Auto Sales and Leitz Farms will receive doggie goodie bags and certificates, pink ribbons for the dogs and T-shirts.

Registration is $20 and will be accepted up until the walk.

All dogs must be on a leash.

For more information, phone DeBord at 360-460-1155 or 360-457-6181, or Margo Peterson-Pruss at 360-460-4251 or 360-452-3333.

On Wednesday will be Pink Up Port Angeles’ first Concert on the Pier.

Soroptimists will “Pink Out the Pier” and offer information on cancer prevention and “Pink Up” goods beginning at 5 p.m., with music by Deadwood Revival beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until 8 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Olympic Medical Center.

‘Celebrity’ dinner

On Thursday, “celebrity” waiters — people known around town — will compete for tips while serving spaghetti dinners at the Chestnut Cottage, 929 E. Front St., Port Angeles, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The dinner is available for a $10 donation. Wine and tips are extra.

The waiters will compete for tips to increase the donation to Operation Uplift, and a basket of goodies from Frannie’s Gifts will be raffled.

“It’s a crazy, wonderful evening of fun,” DeBord said.

The Pink Takeover at Chestnut Cottage has been underwritten by First Federal since its inception, DeBord said.

It’s the week’s biggest fundraising event for Operation Uplift, she said.

Golf tournament

Next Friday, June 24, a golf tournament is planned at Peninsula Golf Club, 824 S. Lindberg Road, Port Angeles.

Tee time will be at noon for the Soroptimists’ Tees Off for Cancer Golf Tournament, which will have a shotgun format.

Prizes will include a 2011 GMC Sierra truck, an Apple iPod and an Amex gift card, DeBord said.

The Mac Ruddell Community Fund has always sponsored this event, DeBord said.

Also sponsoring it are All Weather Heating and Cooling, Strait View Credit Union, Copy Cat Graphics, Sweetest Things Photography and Rudy’s Automotive.

The cost is $80 per golfer, or $45 for Peninsula Golf Course members.

For information, phone Chris Repass at 360-457-6501.

Finale Celebration

On Saturday, June 25, the group plans a Finale Celebration dinner and auction at the Port Angeles CrabHouse Restaurant, 221 N. Lincoln St.

Tickets for the dinner, which will begin at 6 p.m., are $35 each or two for $60.

“This is our second-biggest event,” DeBord said.

“There are lots of wonderful items for bid: fishing trips, gourmet dinners, Victoria trips — even a bunco party.”

Both a silent and live auction are planned.

“Last year, Operation Uplift assisted over 300 people with all types of cancer,” DeBord said.

“It is the goal of Soroptimists to see that they can continue in their mission and that they are funded well into the future.”
