Port Angeles teachers receive certification

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District has announced that six of its teachers received 2017 National Board Certification.

The teachers are Sabrina Scruggs, Franklin Elementary; Molly Hibler, Tiffinny Blore, Stacey Nickerson and Jennifer Reynolds, Roosevelt Elementary; and Campbell Kirkman, Franklin Elementary and Jefferson Elementary.

The certification was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide, according to a news release.

The district was notified in December by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards of its teachers’ certifications.

The teachers were honored during a Feb. 8 school board meeting at the district’s Central Service Building.

“This feels great,” Hibler said.

Said Scruggs: “Receiving my National Board Certification is a major professional milestone and is representative of dedication, rigorous work, examination of my teaching practice, reflection and growth as an educator and musician.”

Added Blore: “National Board certification is considered the ‘gold standard’ in teacher certification and I wanted to be part of that.”

The certification is valid for five years, after which the certification can be renewed.

The state ranks third overall in the nation with 10,135 certified teachers, according to a news release.
