PORT ANGELES — The City Council will accept “letters of interest” until 5 p.m. March 7 from applicants to fill the seat of the late Councilman Jack Pittis, Mayor Karen Rogers said Tuesday night.
Rogers outlined the process at a City Council meeting for how the council will appoint a successor to Pittis, who died earlier this month.
An applicant must be a registered voter of the city and a resident for at least a year
After the March 7 deadline, applicants’ letters will be reviewed by Councilmen Grant Munro and Gary Braun, Rogers said.
Whether they will narrow the field of candidates or make a recommendation to the whole council depends upon the number of letters received, she said.
If the council decides to interview candidates — which it doesn’t have to do –the date and format for those interviews will be decided at the March 7 City Council meeting, Rogers said.
“It’s not a popularity contest,” she said.
“We want the best-qualified candidate.”
