Port Angeles Symphony to audition new members

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Symphony, the 70-member community orchestra starting its 87th season, will hold auditions for new members this fall.

Musicians are urged to contact the symphony office to arrange auditions.

The symphony includes players from Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Sequim as well as from beyond Clallam and Jefferson counties.

“We have openings especially for strings and percussion,” said Jonathan Pasternack, the orchestra’s conductor and music director.

He leads the Symphony in two Pops & Picnic concerts in September and five main-stage symphony concerts and six chamber concerts October through May.

The 2019-20 season will bring music ranging from Brahms, Mozart and Tchaikovsky to Stravinsky’s “Firebird” and the Fauré “Requiem.”

Pasternack, music director since 2015, said he’s always eager to meet new musicians on the North Olympic Peninsula. He added that he is developing a pool of substitute orchestra players.

A volunteer orchestra founded in 1932, the Port Angeles Symphony brings together a variety of players, from accomplished high school students to retired professionals. These musicians play at the 1,144-seat Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, Vern Burton Community Center and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Angeles, and at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sequim.

Singers also have an opportunity to make music with the symphony. Pasternack formed the Port Angeles Symphony Chorus three years ago, and plans to hold auditions for it in October.

To arrange an audition, musicians are encouraged to phone the Port Angeles Symphony office at 360-457-5579 or email PASymphony@olypen.com.
