Port Angeles Symphony host Young Artist Competition on Saturday

PORT ANGELES — Fifteen young musicians will perform during the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra’s 24th Annual Young Artist Competition on Saturday.

Concert selections by middle and high school musicians from Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend will be played during the competition from 9:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez St., Port Angeles.

There is no charge to attend.

Seven students will perform during the Junior Young Artist Competition and eight are scheduled for the Young Artist Competition.

The first prize in both divisions is $500.

Winners will be invited to perform at the Port Angeles Symphony’s “Concert and Cuisine” event in September. The annual event will be at C’est si bon restaurant in Port Angeles.

The four judges are Adam Stern, music director and conductor for the symphony; Kathleen Stern, his wife, who has been a second violinist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra since 1985; Susan Scott, who plays English horn and oboe in the Port Angeles Symphony; and Lylburn Layer, principal clarinet for the Port Angeles Symphony.

The Young Artist Competition is open to any North Olympic Peninsula instrumental music student who will be younger than 22 years old on June 1, and who did not win first prize in the 2009 competition.

The Junior Young Artist Competition is open to any North Olympic Peninsula instrumental music student who is currently in ninth grade or below, who has not competed in or applied for the Symphony’s Young Artist Competition or won first prize in the 2009 competition.

Winners will be announced Saturday.
