PORT ANGELES — The City Council unanimously accepted a request for annexation Tuesday night from two property owners in the city’s western urban growth area, the first of several steps to annex the area into the city.
The annexation request was submitted by Bill Hermann and George Peabody, who own property that comprises 10 percent of the assessed valuation in the proposed annexation area.
The proposed area includes property south of U.S. Highway 101, including the highway, west of the city limit at Old Joe Road, about 1½ miles to the edge of the western urban growth area opposite Reddick Road.
The property includes Lakeside Industries, Blue Mountain Leasing and the Eclipse Industrial Park, site of Port Angeles Hardwood’s proposed alder sawmill.
Clallam County agreed not to protest the annexation if it does not extend north of U.S. Highway 101.
City utilities extended
City utilities, including sewers, would be extended into the annexed area, and they could be extended north of U.S. 101, as long as the area is within the city’s urban growth area.
“It’s a good opportunity for everybody,” Peabody said of why he and Hermann submitted the annexation request.
City Planning Director Brad Collins said for the process to continue, the pair must agree to accept the proposed boundaries, their portion of the city’s bonded indebtedness and the zoning, which is “manufacturing” in the county but would become “heavy industrial” within the city.
Both Hermann and Peabody told the council they accept the three conditions.
