PORT ANGELES — Labor Day weekend might be a memorable holiday for Port Angeles skateboarders.
The skate park project that began as but a concept in June 2002 could be open the first weekend in September.
“The goal is to have the utilities installed next week, then have an open house on the first Saturday in September,” Nor’wester Rotary Club member Steve Zenovic said Tuesday in a presentation on the project to the City Council.
“I think it’s going to be a great draw,” he said.
No skaterboarders will be allowed in the park on Saturday, but it would open for skaters on Sunday, Zenovic said.
Nor’wester Rotary plans to raffle off the opportunity to be the first 10 skaters to use the park legally when it opens that Sunday, he said.
The not-yet-completed park next to Dream Playground at Erickson Playfield at Second and Race streets has been attracting young skaters — “unofficial beta testers,” said Zenovic — since the first concrete was poured.
A formal dedication will be held in late October, Zenovic said.
