PORT ANGELES — Students at two Port Angeles elementary schools have exercised their way into the list of the top five schools statewide that stay active.
Franklin Elementary finished first in the state out of 25 entries in the Play 60 Challenge program sponsored by the American Heart Association and the National Football League, and seventh in the nation out of 241 entries.
Hamilton Elementary finished fourth in the state and 28th in the nation.
The program, founded in 2006, encourages physical activity for youths, said Tina Smith-O’Hara, Port Angeles School District spokeswoman.
Krista Winn, a Port Angeles School District physical education teacher who has a national board certification, teaches at Hamilton and worked with Campbell Kirkman, physical education teacher at Franklin, in the Play 60 Challenge.
The challenge lasts four weeks. Students are asked to get 60 minutes of physical activity a day in school and at home.
They turn in activity logs to their physical education teachers, and teachers track the number of minutes students were physically active.
Winn, who has taught P.E. for 31 years — 26 at Hamilton — was one of 60 people in the nation to receive the Leadership Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition earlier this month.
