PORT ANGELES — Two young men are in Clallam County jail facing possible burglary charges following a manhunt and school lockdown.
Police booked Michael Moyle, 19, and Brandon Birkland, 18, addresses unknown, into the jail for first-degree burglary, a police report said.
Moyle and Birkland will appear Tuesday in Clallam County Superior Court to face possible charges.
A corrections officer at the jail said Saturday that the men are being held without bail until Tuesday’s hearing.
The two were arrested Friday morning following a two-hour manhunt that stretched more than 1½ miles from Scribner Road to Porter Street.
The manhunt began after a homeowner called police at 7:50 a.m. to say he interrupted two burglars in his home.
The two men fled with a hunting rifle allegedly taken during the burglary, police Sgt. Erick Zappey said Friday.
The rifle was later recovered in a woody area near the Olympic National Park boundary on a trail between Race Street and Old Mill Road, Zappey said.
Police notified schools in the vicinity of the manhunt, and school district officials responded by locking down Port Angeles High School, 304 E. Park, and Franklin Elementary School, 2505 S. Washington St.
“Teachers and students were instructed to go into the buildings, close the windows and blinds and lock the door,” Superintendent Gary Cohn said Friday.
As the search continued, Laurel Park Assisted Living, 1133 E. Park Ave., also locked its doors to prevent the two men from entering.
