PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles School District Assistant Superintendent Michelle Reid was narrowly passed over for the job of interim superintendent of schools at South Kitsap School District.
But she has been encouraged to apply for the permanent position, which is likely to be selected in March, said Kathryn Simpson, board president.
The South Kitsap School Board on Monday selected the district’s former superintendent, Beverly Cheney, for the interim position.
The board chose Cheney after publicly interviewing her and Reid.
A third finalist withdrew his name from consideration before the meeting Monday.
Cheney was superintendent at South Kitsap from 2001 to 2008.
Board members said they were impressed with Reid but gave Cheney the position to provide stability within the district after major upheavals in the district’s staff in the past six months, including the death of the district’s deputy superintendent, the retirement of the executive secretary and the departure of the superintendent.
Simpson praised Reid, who holds a doctorate, noting that she was highly qualified, with successes in the many roles she has held as an educator.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s not available in March,” she said.
