Port Angeles School Board to meet twice this week on superintendent candidates, school bond plans

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School Board will meet twice this week — once to select candidates for superintendent and again to choose an architecture and engineering firm to prepare a report and pre-design plans for a bond to replace Port Angeles High School.

The board is expected to select superintendent semi-finalists from a field of candidates today at a special meeting at 3 p.m. at the Central Services Building, 216 E. Fourth St.

The board will meet in executive session to review candidate qualifications then open the meeting to the public to vote on selections for semi-finalists.

It is not known what time the board will emerge from executive session for the vote.

A final selection for superintendent is expected to take place at the March 27 school board meeting.

Jane Pryne, the current superintendent, announced in December that she will retire on June 30 after five years at the helm of Port Angeles School District.

The district currently has 3,014 enrolled students and is the largest school district on the North Olympic Peninsula.

The board will also meet at the Central Services Building at 7 p.m. Thursday to review three architectural and engineering firms’ bids to provide pre-bond planning services for a construction bond measure to fund a replacement of the 60-year-old Port Angeles High School.

District staff members submitted a recommendation for McGranahan Architects of Tacoma.

Other firms under consideration are Erickson McGovern Architects of Tacoma and BLRB Architects of Bend, Ore.

The selected firm will work with the district to determine the cost of building a new high school, according to the district’s preferences for features and size of the building required, and prepare plans for the proposed new school.

Once a cost is determined, the board will approve a bond measure to be put before district voters.

At Thursday’s meeting, the board will also:

n hear program updates for Port Angeles High School and the Boys and Girls Club

n be asked to approve a cybersecurity and forensics course at Port Angeles High School
