Port Angeles School Board to consider levy statement

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School Board will consider the wording of an explanatory statement for a levy proposal on the Feb. 14 ballot when it meets Thursday.

The statement would go into the voter guide for the special election.

The board will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. at Stevens Middle School, 1139 W. 14th St. The regular session will be preceded by a strategic planning workshop at 5 p.m. and an executive session at 6:30 p.m. to consider employment, review the performance of a public employee, consult with legal counsel, consider the position to be taken in collective bargaining or to consider acquisition or sale of real estate.

The proposed levy would replace an existing levy that will expire at the end of 2017.

It would authorize collection of property taxes to provide $9.1 million each year from 2018 through 2021.

The estimated tax rate would be, per $1,000 of assessed valuation, $3.30 in 2018, $3.26 in 2019, $3.23 in 2020 and $3.20 in 2021.

The board also will consider approval of committees of levy proponents and opponents to write statements for the voter guide.

The board will consider high school graduation requirements on a second reading, a language access plan, a health curriculum and an additional grounds position for the district.

It will hear reports on truancy and finances.
