PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District board has determined its criteria for the next superintendent that will guide it through the selection process.
Directors hashed out the wording at a special meeting Jan. 30 and voted unanimously to approve the one-page document.
They worked from a draft produced by Human Capital Enterprises, which crafted it using 328 responses to a community survey it distributed and feedback from three focus groups it organized.
“It represents the best thinking of what this community would like you to focus on,” said Hank Harris, president of Human Capital Management, who participated in the meeting via Zoom.
Criteria were broken into four categories: an inspiring visionary and innovator with significant school district leadership experience; a visible and compassionate leader; a champion of equity; and an authentic communicator and relationship-builder.
Each category included specific examples of how the superintendent would exemplify those qualities.
“I’m proud of this document,” director Mary Hebert said. “It’s reflective of what we really do want.”
As the board moves forward in the selection process, it will determine the core competencies and hard skills that, along with the criteria, will be used to develop questions for the candidates.

The window for superintendent applications closes Wednesday. The board will review applications in an executive session on Feb. 18, when they will vote on candidates they want to interview.
Those interviews will be held Feb. 22.
Interviews with finalists are scheduled for Feb. 27-28.
The names of applicants, candidates and finalists will not be released; the board will announce the name of their pick sometime in March.
The new superintendent will replace current superintendent Marty Brewer, who will step down when his contract expires Aug. 31.
Directors said they continue to seek input from the community on the superintendent search.
Two directors will be available to speak to individuals in person at 4 p.m. at the Wildcat Cafe before their next regularly scheduled meeting at 5 p.m. Feb. 13 at Lincoln Center, 905 W. Ninth St., Port Angeles.
