PORT ANGELES — The only woman competing in this weekend’s Windermere Masters Sand Sculpture Classic says she has competed all over the world — and she is impressed with this competition.
“Everyone is so nice,” said Sandy Feet of South Padre Island, Texas.
“This is hard work. It helps to keep your attitude right when people are coming up to you and asking, ‘What can I do for you?”‘.
Feet noted that the July weather in Port Angeles is great compared to hot and humid south Texas.
She has been sand sculpting for 20 years at such events and locales as the world championships at Harrison Hot Springs in British Columbia, China, South Africa, Europe, Aruba and a week in the Bahamas with the “Regis and Kelly” television show.
But she’s never been in a contest that used heavy machinery to move the sand as is done in Port Angeles, Feet said.
The sand sculpting is a key feature of Arts in Action, the 38th annual festival featuring arts and crafts at a street fair (that this year is on City Pier).
Eight sculptors are competing for prize money ranging from $500 to $1,500. The judging of their works will be conducted Saturday.
