Port Angeles robbery suspect on the loose

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles police were searching Monday for a man they say robbed the Fairmount Grocery Store at gunpoint late Sunday.

There were no injuries.

The bandit is described as a Latino or possibly Native American male, about 30 years old, 5-feet-9-inches to 6 feet tall and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds.

He was wearing dark clothes with a mask covering the lower portion of his face when he entered the grocery store at 1137 W. U.S. Highway 101 in west Port Angeles at 10:40 p.m.

Port Angeles police said he was armed with a rifle and demanded all the cash in the cash register.

The clerk complied with the robber, who then fled eastbound from the store.

Police would not say how much money was taken.

Port Angeles police, including a police dog, searched the area. Lower Elwha police and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the initial investigation.

Brian Smith, Port Angeles deputy police chief, said detectives were following up on leads Monday and processing footprints, fingerprints and “all the forensic stuff,” Smith said.

Anyone with information about the subject is asked to phone Port Angeles police at 360-452-4545

Port Angeles Police Detective Kevin Spencer is in charge of the case.
