PORT ANGELES — Rayonier, Inc., wants to refurbish its Ennis Drive dock, but a local environmental group claims replacing pilings will stir up contaminated sediment.
The Planning Commission will consider a shoreline development permit for the project when it meets Aug. 22.
State Environmental Policy Act comments are due today and state Shoreline Act comments are due by Aug. 21.
Rayonier wants to replace 800 support pilings and 300 protective pilings on its 1,100-foot dock at its former Ennis Drive pulp mill site.
The pulp mill closed in March of 1997.
Since the closure, Rayonier has been cleaning up the site, which is rated as “moderately contaminated” by the U.S. Evironmental Protection Agency.
