Misty McCrorie calls it “pure luck” that the mother of her close friends was at McCrorie’s home Thursday night, rather than her own.
Before most people were awake on Friday morning, Jane Bonds’ house on U.S. Highway 101 between Port Angeles and Carlsborg was being ravaged by flames that eventually left just a burned-out shell.
McCrorie said Bonds, 45, whom she calls “mom” and at whose house McCrorie has spent countless hours, had spent Thursday night with her in Port Angeles as she grieved a recent death in her family.
“She showed up to take care of me because she always comes through for me, and thank God,” McCrorie said Friday.
“It was just luck, pure luck.”
Passer-by spots fire
A passer-by spotted the fire and reported it at 5:59 a.m.
By the time firefighters from Clallam County Fire District No. 3 arrived on scene nine minutes later, flames were already coming out of the west side of Bonds’ two-story house, District 3 Chief Steve Vogel said.
Fire trucks from District 3’s R Corner, Carlsborg and Sequim stations, plus a water tender from Clallam County Fire District No. 2, parked along the westbound shoulder of Highway 101 in front of the house at 257763 Highway 101, near Barr Road.
The highway stayed open throughout the fire.
