Port Angeles prepares for 5,000 at memorial for slain officer

PORT ANGELES — Free shuttle service will transport mourners Monday from three Port Angeles parking lots to Civic Field, the site of a public memorial service for slain Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks.

Besides family members and friends, 5,000 people — including law enforcement officers from across the United States — are expected to attend the service at 1 p.m. Monday in Civic Field, on Race Street between Second and Fourth streets in Port Angeles.

Westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 will be closed for an hour before the service, and five Port Angeles streets will be closed most of the day.

The closure is to permit a police procession from the old Kmart parking lot at Masters Road and Highway 101.

Fairbanks died Saturday afternoon when she was shot in the head at the Forest Service Dungeness Forks campground after telling a dispatcher she was checking a Dodge van without license plates.

She is survived by her husband, Brian, her 15-year-old daughter, Whitney, both of Forks; and her father, John Willits of Port Angeles.

Clallam Transit System and the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe will operate shuttles every 15 minutes, and Clallam Transit will provide free round trips to Civic Field from Forks, where Fairbanks lived.

Routes and times of service will include:

  • From North Ennis Road at the former Rayonier parking lot, 9 to 11 a.m., when it will end to make way for the police procession.

  • From Front and Oak streets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • From the Clallam County Fairgrounds L Street entrance from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • From the Forks Transit Center, two special buses will leave at 10:45 a.m. The regularly scheduled 11 a.m. bus also will stop at Civic Field.

Return shuttles will operate as long as necessary, said Donna Nemeth, Forest Service information officer.
