PORT ANGELES — It’s official: saving William Shore Memorial Pool will cost property owners the same amount that was estimated earlier this year.
The William Shore Memorial Pool District commission on Nov. 10 passed a 15 cent per $1,000 assessed valuation tax on property within the boundaries of the metropolitan park district.
Dropping values
But because of dropping property values, the amount the district levies in 2010 will be about $50,000 less than what was previously sought, said Mike Chapman, pool district and Clallam County commissioner.
Instead of making any cuts, Chapman said the park district will simply pay back its loans to the county after five years instead of three.
The park district will receive $475,000 in property tax revenue in 2010.
Chapman said the three commissioners felt it was important not to tax property owners more than they were expecting.
“We’re just going to make this work,” he said.
Voters within the park district — which shares the same boundaries as the Port Angeles School District — approved its creation last spring to keep the pool from closing.
The city of Port Angeles said it could no longer afford to keep it running.
The city is still running the pool on behalf of the park district and will do so until about March.
The park district — through loans from Clallam County — is reimbursing Port Angeles for its expenses.
