Port Angeles pool district creates public fund

PORT ANGELES — The William Shore Memorial Pool District has established a community fund that allows the public to make donations for specific improvements to the public pool.

District commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to establish the fund for the pool at 225 E. Fifth St. in Port Angeles.

Commissioner Pat Downie said the idea was “well-endorsed and popular.”

“It would be a way for people to designate funds to go to a certain focus,” Downie said.

SDLqIt’s a document often used by organizations that are appealing to the public.

“We’re not blazing new trail here.”

The community fund identifies four areas of need: swim camps, swim lesson assistance, specialized swim programs and capital improvement.

Items on the capital improvement wish list are a children’s splash and play pool, a therapy pool, a spa and new lockers.

Donation, gift

If someone wants to make a donation or a tax-deductible gift, “they could put it in this fund and tell us how they want the pool to spend it,” Commissioner Mike Chapman said.

The community fund accepts bequests, stocks, bonds, memorials, real property and estate.

Chapman said pool officials hope the fund will generate interest from community members who support the 50-year-old pool.

He said the community fund was conceived by pool Commissioner Mike Doherty.

“You can give him the credit for the idea,” Chapman said.

For information on how to donate, phone William Shore Memorial Pool Executive Director Steven Burke at 360-417-9767 or email him at sburke@williamshorepool.org.
