PORT ANGELES — Police are searching for a young male who shot a juvenile male with a BB gun Saturday night at the Dream Playground, 308 S. Race St.
Officer Dan Morse said police were dispatched to a weapons discharge complaint at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
The youth had shot a juvenile male with a type of BB gun often sold under the Air Soft brand name, then left the scene before officers arrived, he said.
At this point, there’s only one known shooting victim and the investigation is continuing, Morse said. The victim didn’t require medical attention, he said.
Morse said the incident occurred while the Clallam County Family YMCA, 308 E. 302 S. Francis St., was hosting its Saturday teen night.
The YMCA hosts its weekly teen night for sixth- to eighth-graders from 7-10 p.m. Saturday.
The Y House across the alley hosts 15- through 18-year-olds during the same time.
As many as 100 or more youths were going back and forth between Erickson Park and the YMCA, Morse said.
The Port Angeles Skate Park closes at dusk but the adjacent Dream Playground doesn’t close until 11 p.m., he said.
Morse said the incident highlights the dangers of the BB guns, such as the one used by the suspect.
“Parents buy them for their kids thinking they are toys. You can go to any department store and buy one.
“They shoot yellow plastic BBs and many of them are clear plastic. They really are quite dangerous.
“In some cases, people could be charged with assault or worse, depending upon the extent of the injuries,” Morse said.
