NEWS RELEASE FROM Brian Smith, Port Angeles deputy police chief:
Since [last Thursday] July 23, the Port Angeles Police Department has responded to and for received 18 reports of vehicle prowls throughout the city.
The Clallam County Sheriff’s Department has received additional vehicle prowl reports in the unincorporated areas.
In at least nine instances, the method of vehicle entry was through a broken window. In the other instances the method of entry was through unlocked vehicle doors. Items stolen include credit cards and cash.
Law enforcement is asking for help from the community in both crime prevention and in the efforts to stop the crimes and arrest the offenders.
It is important that unattended vehicles be left locked and that items such as purses, wallets and attractive electronic devices not be left inside the vehicle.
Persons who become aware that they have been a victim of a vehicle prowl or theft should call the police immediately at 360-452-4545.
If it appears that there is a vehicle prowl in progress, please call 9-1-1.
It is also important to report to law enforcement suspicious persons or vehicles in neighborhoods or around businesses.
